Exhibition: Art or Kitsch?

Soon, the Princenhaags Museum will showcase unique works by Theo Rasenberg and Jacques van Poppel.

Information

In the first quarter of 2026, an exhibition will take place featuring works by Theo Rasenberg and Jacques van Poppel. The title refers to Rasenberg's oeuvre, who often repainted famous paintings, raising the question: is this art or kitsch?

Theo Rasenberg, born in Princenhage, began his career with a toy factory on the Haagweg, where among other things, toy horses were made. Later, he started a small fish float factory and eventually chose painting as his profession. At the age of 13, he received a painting box from his father and started painting. He was taught by the well-known Princenhage artist Jan Theuns. His widow donated several works, including a version of the Nachtwacht, which hung in Beurs Modern on the Grote Markt in Breda for many years.

Additionally, study drawings by Jacques van Poppel will be exhibited, originating from the family of Jan van den Hurk from Venray. These drawings were once featured on the program Tussen Kunst & Kitsch and assessed by expert Mr. De Winter. He directed the family to Van Poppel's birthplace environment, Princenhage, which is why the works ended up there. This is unique material that has never been exhibited before.
