Dodendraad bike tour | Gilde De Baronie

This route of Gilde De Baronie pays attention to the First World War (1914-1918), also known as The Great War.

The route passes through Meersel-Dreef and Meerle to the Wortel colony, and from there via Zondereigen to Baarle-Nassau. The border with Belgium is crossed no less than four times.

The Dodendraad was an electric border obstacle from WWI designed to prevent smugglers, spies, deserters, or frontline volunteers from Belgium reaching neutral the Netherlands. 1914–1918, at the border: Germans, Belgians, Dutch, all together: high voltage at the border!
