Vincent van Gogh drew his inspiration from the surroundings of the Oude Buisse Heide. Writer and politician Henriette Roland Holst donated the estate to Natuurmonumenten in 1945. She described the place with the words "so lovely, peaceful and idyllically charming, that every person who visits it is struck by its silence and joyful harmony."

The heath consists of 200 hectares of park and garden forests and estate forests with old avenues. All around the Oude Buisse Heide, remnants of the peat history can be found.
