Commemorate Keti Koti in Breda

The Stichting Herdenking Afschaffing Slavernij Breda presents a special programme on the occasion of Keti Koti.

Monday 30 June:

On Monday, you commemorate the abolition of slavery. The programme starts at 19:30 with a bell-ringing by Paul Jankowski. This is followed by impressive speeches by:

  • Maria Karg: anthropologist and founder of Stichting Stil Verleden. She will speak about slavery in education.
  • Astrid Echteld: coach and counsellor. Echteld will discuss the legacy of slavery.
  • Glenn Helberg: psychiatrist and activist. He reflects on the impact of slavery to this day.
  • Mayor Paul Depla will also deliver a speech on behalf of the municipality.

The evening will be musically accompanied by choir El Sinar.

Tuesday 1 July:

On Tuesday, you celebrate the abolition of slavery with a diverse and cultural programme. The event begins at 16:00 with a libation offered by Roy Emanuels. From that moment, the stands will also be open. The programme features various performances by choirs, musicians and more.

From 18:00, a delicious Heri Heri meal will be offered by Familie Maken and Goedzooi. Throughout the day, there will be an audiovisual presentation by artist Sebastiaan Schoonen.
