The mixed choir Cantabile Breda will hold a festive Christmas concert on Sunday afternoon, 22 December, at St. Laurentius Church under the direction of Gabrielka Clout. The programme features various pieces, with the highlight being Snow Angel by Canadian composer Sarah Quartel – a work that has never been performed before in Breda. Snow Angel evokes the innocence and wonder with which children view the world and invites us to be open to this experience.The musical accompaniment is special: pianist Maurick Reuser, the Bovini String Quartet (including a cello solo), and a djembe player enhance the choir. Additionally, three narrators add extra depth to the concert. Alongside traditional Polish kolęda's and English Christmas carols, the Christmas story is sung with works by composers such as Buxtehude and Rutter.In these restless times, it can be difficult to believe in the Christmas message of joy, hope, and peace. Nevertheless, there are also songs that, although not specifically written for Christmas, evoke a serene and contemplative atmosphere. Abendlied by Rheinberger, for example, evokes nostalgic feelings of togetherness. Gjeilo’s Ubi caritas et amor reminds us of the value of care and love. Elgar's The Snow poetically compares the purity of snow to the innocence of the soul.
