BUT Film Festival 2025

The BUT Film Festival celebrates a special milestone this year: the 20th edition of the festival for B-movies, underground, trash, and experimental cinema. From 27 to 31 August 2025, Breda will once again become a hub of boundary-pushing film art and raw underground culture. This year's theme: 'Virtual Insanity'.

In a time when the line between reality and digital madness becomes increasingly blurred, the BUT Film Festival delves deep into the world of virtual alienation, technoparanoia, and digital nightmares – in other words, this year focuses on the madness that arises when technology takes over.

Programme
For the 20th edition, BUTFF is again presenting a packed programme: More than fifty films from around the world, including premieres, cult classics, and obscure gems. International guests: directors, actors, and artists from the underground scene. Live performances, performances art, art installations, craft beers, and more.

BUT Awards
This year, awards will again be presented for, among others, the 'BUT Best' feature film and the 'BUT Best' short film, awarded by an international jury.

Festival director Ryan Oomen on the theme:
"Virtual Insanity is more than just a nod to the digital era we live in – it is a warning, a celebration, and an hallucination rolled into one. We invite everyone to step out of their digital bubble and immerse themselves with us in our virtual madness."

Locaties:
The festival hub, as always, is located in and around Nieuwe Veste, the Filmhuis Breda, and on Sunday also in Chassé Cinema for a special 35mm film programme.

• Wednesday 27 August: Opening evening from 20:00 at the inner courtyard of Nieuwe Veste (St. Janstraat)
• Thursday 28 August: Special performance evening from 20:00 to 23:00 (Nieuwe Veste Theatre Hall)
• Thursday 28 to Sunday 31 August: Film screenings in 4 cinemas from 11:00 to 23:30 (Nieuwe Veste & Filmhuis Breda)
• Thursday 28 to Sunday 31 August: a performance block of half an hour at 16:30 and 19:30 (Nieuwe Veste inner courtyard)
• Friday 29 August: Metal Friday, metal music evening in collaboration with Prikkeldraad from 20:00 to 23:00
• Saturday 30 August: music evening in collaboration with Poppodium Phoenix from 20:00 to 23:00
• Saturday 30 August: Film and music market from 12:00 to 18:00 (Nieuwe Veste inner courtyard)
• Sunday 31 August: special 35mm film programme from 11:00 to 22:00 (Chassé Cinema)
