BuitenBios Botanique - Hamnet
Information
Welcome to the BuitenBios Botanique, the open-air film evenings in the heart of Breda!
About the film
Inspired by the eponymous novel by Maggie O’Farrell, Hamnet depicts the story of Agnes, a free-spirited woman, and her husband William Shakespeare, who see their family formed and torn apart by fate. While Agnes bears an all-encompassing grief, William transforms his emotions into one of the most iconic plays ever written. With profound, physical acting performances by Jessie Buckley (Wicked Little Letters, The Lost Daughter) and Paul Mescal (Aftersun, All of Us Strangers), Hamnet is a visually enchanting, emotionally powerful film about how love manages to find a way through the darkness.
The film premiered at prestigious festivals, where it received standing ovations and glowing reviews for its cinematography, screenplay, and impressive acting performances. Critics especially praise the direction of female director Chloé Zhao, which feels both grand and vulnerable. With her intense and layered portrayal of a woman embodying strength, vulnerability, and determination, actress Jessie Buckley won a Golden Globe and an Oscar for Best Actress for Hamnet.
'In ‘Hamnet’, Jessie Buckley impresses as William Shakespeare’s wife Agnes, who processes the death of their son Hamnet in the masterpiece ‘Hamlet’.'
