Vincent van Gogh (born in Zundert 1853 and died in Auvers-sur-Oise in 1890) was a post-impressionist, a movement that followed Impressionism. He aimed to show what he saw and experienced. Art had to speak to the soul.
He is now regarded as one of the great painters of the 19th century. However, this recognition came relatively late. During his lifetime, only one painting was sold. A sister of his friend bought it a few months before his death.
Van Gogh created all his works in just ten years before he began suffering from a nervous disorder and took his own life. In total, he painted 825 paintings.
