Bike Tour Bergsche Vesting | Gilde De Baronie

This bike tour led by Gilde De Baronie goes through the Vuchtpolder and the Linie of Munnikenhof to Geertruidenberg

Information

The Vuchtpolder played an important military role in the Eighty Years' War. Even before the arrival of the Spanish troops, the polder was flooded by the Breda garrison.

The Vuchtpolder is a unique area for grassland and waterfowl. The Linie van de Munnikenhof was built at the time to protect the area between Breda and Geertruidenberg. It forms a whole with the Linie van Den Hout and the Spinolaschans. All of which are old defensive works.

In Geertruidenberg, you cycle past a number of interesting buildings. Geertruidenberg received city rights in 1213 and is therefore Holland's oldest city, even disputing Dordrecht's claim. It was an important trading city until 1420 when the Hook and Cod Wars caused much damage to the city. A city full of history.

Notably, many houses in the city still have a name, which was common in the past.
