Spacing is not just "nothing", but also an active, shaping force in both the creation and experience of art. In this exhibition, it is about the interplay between Sjan and Gerard as a couple, their work, and the viewer. Below follows an explanation of the development of Sjan and Gerard as artists, their works, and the way they approach their work.Sjan van Hooijdonk (Bavel, 1953)&nbsp; Sjan studied at the IKO (Highgate Art College) for 5 years in the sculpture studio and then completed the 2 specialised years. (Watching) multiple life-sized elephants (by artist Andries Botha, Beaufort 2006), built from pieces of stranded driftwood, was the inspiration for her to create images using small elements. She began experimenting with toothpicks until she discovered a base of PU (polyurethane) and Epoxy (synthetic resin) that they could be inserted into. Intuitively searching for form and colour, her sculptures come into being (often consisting of thousands of toothpicks). It was also a challenge to create increasingly larger pieces. Look at her sculptures as forms in which you can see what you see. Although the sculptures look touchable, they certainly are not.Gerard Zonneveld (Utrecht, 1954)&nbsp; Alongside his photography studies at St. Joost Art College in Breda, Gerard’s graphic background is also clearly visible in his work. After a long period of commercial work in his own photo studio, his free work now receives all attention again. “Photographing is writing with light”, that has always been his motto. Gerard has always been fascinated by light and shadow. His work is continuously developing. It all starts with the shoots, often from strange viewpoints. It’s primarily about careful observation, because during the photographing process, consideration is already given to the final result. From the shoots, the search begins for structure, colour, repetition, symmetry, and abstraction, making the images, so to speak, dynamic objects. From his photographs, new forms emerge with the help of an extensive digital environment, such as in the theme “Caleidos”, from which the Totem also arises, and the theme “Windows”, which often results in his Collages.Practical informationThe first exhibition day is Saturday 1st August 2026.
