All by myself

Why do you have to pay extra at some hotels if you’re sleeping in a room alone?! Why do single people have to tick ‘unmarried’ on official documents, as though their status were only temporary? Why are we still brought up with the idea that we need to find our ‘other half’, one soulmate who will make us ‘complete’?

Information

Our society is quite clearly structured around the romantic ideal of the monogamous couple with a family as the endgame. And that’s despite estimates suggesting that by 2050, half of all households will consist of single people. Half! Do you realise how many millions of people that is? That’s... in any case, far too many people to still be labelled as falling ‘outside the norm’.

In All by myself, Romy questions the assumed nature and social pressure of that norm, and explores what it means to be a 35-year-old single woman – an age that is, of course, completely ‘past its sell-by date’. As a chronic single who has never had a romantic partner, Romy looks in the mirror and, with plenty of humour, offers a glimpse into her experience. Because, well, what is ‘normal’? And where do you find meaning if the ‘greatest happiness imaginable’ doesn’t seem to be meant for you? A counterpoint to the Western tyranny of a linear life, logic and boxes to tick. A search for connection. Through the love of friendship, shame, dating, longing, the difference between being ‘alone’ and ‘lonely’, and how irritating unsolicited advice is. A funny and moving solo show (what else), for all the outsiders looking in and all the insiders looking out.

Come and see it! At least then we won’t be alone for a little while.
