Parks in Breda
Article
The Valkenberg City Park is the green heart of the city and THE meeting place for locals in Breda. Between the historic buildings and the station, you can relax by the pond with fountain, unwind under the old trees, or just watch people while enjoying your ice cream.
Have you already heard of the Spoorpark? The park is located behind the courthouse on Stationslaan and is still relatively unknown, but definitely worth a visit. With picnic tables in a prime location between the railway and the city, and relaxing spots with views of the large church.
Looking for more peace? Then Zaartpark, Brabantpark, or Boeimeerpark are your go-to. Both are just outside the city centre, with wide grassy fields and walking paths where you can really get some fresh air.
For a touch of history and tranquility, Wilhelminapark is the place to visit. The old fortifications have been transformed here into the elegant, winding ponds of today. You will also find three special memorial sites here, commemorating the Second World War. A park full of stories, and a lovely spot for a peaceful walk.
The Mayor van Sonsbeeckpark is full of surprises. For example, more than fifty different types of trees grow in the park. The park was opened by Mayor Willem van Sonsbeeck, who aimed to turn Breda into a true ‘park city’.
The city gardens in Breda are the hidden spots where you can momentarily forget that you're in a city. For example, the Willem Merkxtuin is a quiet inner garden, hidden behind Breda's busy shopping streets. With colourful flowers, cooling trees, and striking artworks, it feels like a small hidden paradise right in the middle of the city. Perfect for a peaceful moment in between, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Close to the Willem Merkxtuin, you'll find the Begijnhof. In this inner courtyard behind the Catharinastraat, you take a journey back in time and step into a completely different world. The Begijnhof features an extensive herb garden. The Beguines had a lot of knowledge of medicinal herbs and used them frequently in healthcare. Even back then, the residents of Breda used nature to their advantage!
If you're outside the centre of Breda and looking for a green hotspot, then the Westertuin is a place you shouldn't miss. With its green lawns, play areas, and shady trees, it's a lovely spot where residents gather, but also a quiet place where you can just sit with a book. Small, cosy, and perfect for a short break in the green.
Good news for everyone who enjoys walking or cycling through Breda: the Vlaszak has received a significant makeover. There has been hard work to make this part of the city greener and more beautiful. More greenery, less traffic, and a much nicer place to stop and relax!
Also at the StadsGalerij opposite the Vlaszak, something special is happening. Here, a bit of urban agriculture is coming! Artist Noortje de Brouwer is allowed to fully unleash her creativity here. How fun is that?
Some horeca establishments know exactly how to bring nature into the city. Think of terraces full of plants like at coffee hotspot Sip First, Il Vicoletto, or at In Kannen en Kruiken. Here, it feels as if you're in an urban jungle, but with a cappuccino.
There's also a lovely peaceful courtyard at de Nieuwe Veste. Walk through the library to the surprisingly green backyard garden with art and seating areas. Not busy, but super cozy with wonderful silence.
In the city centre, you will find various streets with green facades such as Ginnekenstraat or Sint Annastraat. Think of Ivy, flower boxes, and Wisteria. Small details that make a big difference to the atmosphere. Keep your eyes open!
Along the waters around Breda Castle, you'll often see ducks, swans, or even herons relaxing in the reeds. Walk along the moats or rent a SUP board. You experience the city quite differently from the water.
If you walk along the Nieuwe Mark, you'll notice all sorts of plants growing along the quay. The quay walls are built with special coarse mortar, making it easy for seeds to germinate. Trees are even growing out of the walls! A perfect example of how Breda cleverly combines nature and the city.
Just outside the city, towards the Belgian border, you will find the Markdal: a vast natural area where the river Mark meanders. Here, you can walk along meadows, green banks, and wetlands full of birds. It feels far away from the city, yet you are actually entering the green countryside right from het Ginneken. Perfect for a long walk or bike ride.
On 20 May, Breda officially received the title of National Park City! With this, the city now joins global cities like London and Adelaide, where nature and urban life go hand in hand.
This title is an international recognition of all the green initiatives Breda undertakes. From green roofs to city parks and biodiversity along the water.
Residents, entrepreneurs, and the municipality have worked hard together to make the city greener and healthier. Breda is now part of a worldwide movement aiming to make cities greener. So, it’s time to enjoy even more of all that urban nature around you!
