Castle of Breda
Kasteel van Breda is owned by the Royal Military Academy and is normally closed to the public. Especially for Heritage Open Days, guided tours will be provided on both days.
This castle was once the ancestral seat of the Nassaus, the forebears of our royal family. Because of the Nassaus’ important international role, the castle was an important place in Europe from the 15th to the 17th century. Breda Castle has a long history. The Royal Military Academy has been based here since 1828.

Lunet B
Lunet B was once built to protect Breda against a possible Belgian attack, but ultimately never had to see action.
The defensive structure from 1843 then gained a very different life indeed: the site was used as a manure heap and rubbish dump, while the structure itself was later used to store road salt. Today, you’ll find modern workspaces behind the fortress walls, which are metres thick. A fascinating piece of Breda’s history where old and new literally come together.

Bouvigne Estate
Bouvigne Castle is an iconic moated castle just outside Breda, dating back to the 15th century. Originally built as a defensible residence, it evolved into a stately country estate. Surrounded by historic gardens and waterways, the castle reflects centuries of architecture, religion and governance. Today, it is owned by Waterschap Brabantse Delta and serves as a special place for heritage and water management.

Seelig Barracks - De Rooi Pannen Campus
Where the Seelig Barracks once stood, students from De Rooi Pannen can now be found. The stunning architecture, the old buildings that whisper stories of times long past, and the modern facilities together form the backdrop to everyday life and learning. The campus is a bridge between the past, present and future, a place where tradition and innovation go hand in hand.

Mission House St. Francis Xavier - Park Zuiderhout
As soon as you drive up the impressive avenue to Park Zuiderhout, you immediately feel that you have arrived at a special place with a rich history. The more than 100-year-old Mission House – once a major seminary – stands here as a majestic witness to the past. It is now a caring community where older people celebrate life.
Last year, some plaster came loose in the chapel. Beneath it, an old mural of a dove was discovered, surprisingly well preserved. The dove, which already holds special significance within religious life, has thus found its place once again.
Park Zuiderhout is opening its doors especially for Heritage Days, with a programme for the public. This is their second year taking part, but each time they offer a different perspective. This time, the focus is on the story of the dove and the mural discovered during restoration work.

Discover the hidden art on Breda’s façades
Go on a treasure hunt through Breda’s shopping streets and discover the beautiful decorations on buildings. Look up, above the shopfronts, and see how skilled craftspeople such as sculptors, bricklayers and typographers gave—and continue to give—buildings a unique character with ornaments and special details.
With a map in hand, you’ll walk through the city centre in search of these small works of art. It’s a fun and educational activity for young and old. In a playful way, you’ll learn more about the remarkable architecture and craftsmanship that make Breda so special.
This activity was specially developed for the 2025 Open Monument Days in Breda and the theme ‘Built to last’ by Breda-based designer Luc Goderie.
