Exhibition: The Nassaus of Breda
Information
Castle, city and land
Did you know that the roots of the Dutch royal family are in Breda? The city still breathes the grandeur of the Oranje-Nassaus. Over six hundred years ago, Johanna of Polanen, heiress of the Lord of Breda, married Engelbrecht of Nassau, and thus a royal chapter began that forever changed the city.
From festivals and intrigues to power and splendor: generations of Nassau family members left their mark on Breda. Their legacy is visible everywhere – at the Grote Markt, in the noble houses, the fortress, the impressive Grote Kerk with the Nassau crypts, and of course the Castle of Breda, once a leading Renaissance palace.
A time travel through three centuries
Stroll through the city and travel through three centuries of history: the rise, prosperity, and decline of Breda. Thanks to the Nassaus, the city grew into a centre of power and culture. Ultimately, that turbulent period led to the Peace of Münster, and the formation of the Netherlands as we know it today. And yes, the famous trick with the Turfschip also features!
