Graphic designer Sebastian (@foreverneverstudio) is one of the Breda creators who were in the spotlight during TURF 2025. His signature: designs with a deeper layer, a story or message. And: with humour. “Whatever I create, there's always a wink in it.

Actually, I wish everyone what I myself received," says Peter Westerlaken (@peterwesterlaken), director of Poppodium Phoenix. "My life is built on live music. It gave me friends, confidence, and opportunities. I want to pass that on.

No fuel, no fire

That she performed her first solo show at Podium Bloos on 12 June feels like a very full circle for ‘word alchemist’ Jasja Renne (@jasjarenne). "As a little girl, I stood here too. The expressive side was already in me: I wrote, took drama lessons at Nieuwe Veste, and danced at – back then – the Scene. With the end shows, we performed on this very stage. It feels right that I was standing here again now.

The music of the Breda artist Jean Jacques (Sebas, for those who know him better) is difficult to categorize into a single genre. Yes, it is hip-hop, but it also contains elements of soul, jazz, and pop. Without vocal exaggeration or grand gestures, as authentic and precise as possible. His lyrics reflect on the hustle and bustle of life. And on his personal journey towards a more mindful, slower existence. Without it becoming gloomy. We spoke with him. About big dreams, ‘everything by feel’, and what happens when you decide to go right, where the others go left.

Placemaker Tim van den Burg has a good touch with vacant Breda. On and around the Veilingkade, he has transformed many grim locations into creative incubators. Among others, Belcrum Beach, Stek, and the former Brack are his creations. Tim's most recent achievement: Park 't Zoet, on the former CSM site.

Park 't Zoet is a stage for the city

On 29 March, Podium Bloos and Poppodium Phoenix are the domain of young creators from North Brabant aged between 13 and 19. In 8 categories, they do ‘their creative thing’, in the hope of a @Kunstbende finals place. And yes, it’s worth it: names like Snelle, Martin Garrix, Stefano Keizers, and Abdelkader Benali come from the Kunstbende ‘nursery’. However, great success is not always the goal.

Anouk Van den Berg (De Gisting, Bureau Pees) works as a director, theatre maker and theatre educator. She prefers to create site-specific theatre about the significance of special, often historic, places for the city. Together with people for whom that place is of great importance or has been. “In doing so, I deliberately choose locations and people who are outside my ‘bubble’. The new, different and unknown: that fascinates me.”

Blind Walls Gallery is working on an expanding collection of murals. Artworks on blank walls, created by (inter)national artists, designers and illustrators depict the stories of the city. Together, they form a painted history of Breda, telling about the present and looking ahead to the future.

In the summer of 2021, the 100th mural was unveiled at Planciusplein.
