A artwork by Jan van den Brink. There is a colourful mosaic artwork on display that has been affixed to a brick wall. It depicts three children playing in earth-toned rings, with a large yellow sun and two pale blue birds in the background. The simple, stylised figures evoke the atmosphere of a carefree summer day.

A green oasis
Meanwhile, Boeimeerpark has become a place for walkers, dog owners, children playing, pleasure boats on the river, teenagers hanging out, and retirees sitting on the benches on the pontoon in the meander, joggers and cyclists choosing the route through the park to reach the city centre or Princenhage to the Mastbos. And sometimes you see a brave swimmer in the Mark river. That river is the artery of this park-like environment. The water ripples through shallows and narrow sections to broaden and lazily spread out over the floodplains. The residents of the surrounding neighbourhoods not only find a green oasis to relax, but their homes are also protected against the threat of floods. In case of extremely high water, a significant part of the park can be flooded.

Sculpture Route

In 2019, Gerard van den Berg and Berry van Gerwen, in consultation with the Municipality of Breda, initiated the placement of artworks in the park: “We would like to create a sculpture route here that continues to Wilhelmina and Van Sonsbeeck parks. A park is the perfect setting to present sculptures, which are currently stored or emerging from another situation and cannot be admired by anyone.”

With the relocation of sculptures from other parts of the city and beyond, the sculpture route has been accessible with QR codes since summer 2024. You can find more information about the artwork and artist by scanning these codes with your mobile phone. But the most enjoyable thing is, of course, to discuss it with other park users. That is also the message from the initiators: “You can have any opinion about art; it always sparks a conversation. Whether you think it’s beautiful or ugly, that’s all fine. Art has an impact. People always stop to look, or they use it as a meeting point.” [i]
