Willem Merkxtuin
This hidden courtyard garden is named after the beloved former mayor Willem Merkx. When he stepped down as mayor in 1984, the sculpture garden with twelve artworks and a sundial was created as a farewell gift. It was his wish to turn the vacant land behind the manor houses on Catharinastraat into a beautiful garden.
From the Merkxtuin, you have a lovely view of the back of the patrician houses on Catharinastraat. The garden is accessible free of charge between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm.
It is also a wonderful place to listen to the carillon of the Grote Kerk at 12.00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
The Willem Merkxtuin has two entrances:
- Gate next to Eetcafé Publieke Werken (St. Annastraat 12)
- Gate between Catharinastraat 24 and 26
