Willem Merkxtuin

This hidden courtyard garden is the green hotspot in Breda. Enjoy the tranquility, art, and a beautiful view of the Grote Kerk and the back of the hofhuizen on Catharinastraat in this courtyard garden.

This hidden courtyard garden is named after the beloved former mayor Willem Merkx. When he stepped down as mayor in 1984, the sculpture garden with twelve artworks and a sundial was created as a farewell gift. It was his wish to turn the vacant land behind the manor houses on Catharinastraat into a beautiful garden.

From the Merkxtuin, you have a lovely view of the back of the patrician houses on Catharinastraat. The garden is accessible free of charge between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm.

It is also a wonderful place to listen to the carillon of the Grote Kerk at 12.00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

The Willem Merkxtuin has two entrances:

  • Gate next to  EetcafĂ© Publieke Werken (St. Annastraat 12)
  • Gate between Catharinastraat 24 and 26
