Water tower in Wilhelminapark

On the edge of Wilhelmina Park stands a striking piece of Breda’s history: the water tower. With its distinctive appearance and height of 42 metres, the tower has been a recognisable landmark in the city since the end of the 19th century.

The water tower was built in 1893 and played an important role in Breda’s first municipal drinking water supply. The reservoir at the top of the tower (500 m3) created sufficient water pressure to distribute drinking water throughout the city.

The tower also had a special place in the design of Wilhelmina Park. Landscape architect Leonard Springer laid out the park so that the water tower could be seen from various locations. This made the structure not only functional, but also part of the cityscape.

Today, the tower is no longer used for the drinking water supply. The building is a national monument and still serves as a reminder of an important chapter in Breda’s development.
