Passage Zuidpoort
Passage Zuidpoort dates back to the 1930s and is a design by architect Frans Mol. Breda aimed to realise its metropolitan ambitions with this.
The shopping gallery remains remarkably authentic, thanks to the shopkeepers who preserve its original appearance as much as possible.
The murals are by Jan Strube. On one side, you see three girls dressed in clothing from that period (long black stockings and knee-length dresses). This painting is intended as an allegory of prosperity arising from harmony and beauty. On the other side, you see the ship ‘Breda’s Prosperity’ sailing into the Spanjaardsgat Breda, with citizens on the left and authorities (including Roman Catholic clergy and military personnel) on the right. Mayor Van Sonsbeeck, director of public works Hornix, the construction entrepreneur, and the architect are clearly recognisable.
