Nassau Baroniemonument - Groene Camino Location
Breda is a NASSAU city. Count Engelbrecht I of Nassau married Joanna of Polanen from Breda in 1403. Through this marriage, the Nassaus became connected with the Low Countries.
At the entrance of Valkenbergpark, you can find the Nassau Barony monument.
Queen Wilhelmina unveiled it in commemoration of Engelbrecht's wedding procession five hundred years earlier. The current park was then, as a garden and hunting ground, part of Engelbrecht's castle. Beneath the adjacent Willemsbrug, many species of bats now fly in and out.
Groene Camino
This location is part of the Groene Camino, a nature and cultural-historical walk through Breda. The walk is 26 km long and runs from the Heilige Eik in Den Hout through the centre of Breda to the Sint Jacobskapel in Galder.
