Nassau Baronie monument

This monument commemorates the arrival of the German Count Engelbrecht van Nassau in the Netherlands. Together with his wife, Johanna van Polanen from Breda, he laid the foundations for the Dutch Royal House.

Engelbrecht I van Nassau and Johanna van Polanen made their entrance as Lord and Lady of Breda six hundred years ago. This 'Blyde Incomste' was immortalised in stone five hundred years later by architect Pierre Cuypers, known for the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

The marriage of Engelbrecht and Johanna marked the beginning of the Dutch royal house. Breda became a Nassau town and reaped the benefits. During the 150 years the Nassaus lived in Breda, the city grew richer and more beautiful.

On the three reliefs you can see how he and his wife, the eleven-year-old Breda-born Johanna van Polanen, were inaugurated as Lord and Lady of Breda. Surrounding them are the coats of arms of twenty municipalities around Breda. At the top, the Lion of Nassau with a royal crown, sword, and shield towers over. The Nassau monument or Baronie monument was ceremoniously unveiled in 1905 by Queen Wilhelmina.
