Huis Ocrum (Nieuwe Veste)
History
After a major city fire in the sixteenth century, Huis Ocrum was built by nobility from the court of Hendrik III. The house featured three wings and a spiral staircase tower. In 1806, the French King of Holland, Louis Napoleon, stayed here with his wife. They were accommodated by a city official who lent luxurious furniture and silverware from wealthy citizens of Breda for this occasion. Huis Ocrum had to look royal after all!
Incidentally, the house had previously hosted distinguished guests. During the signing of the Peace of Breda in 1667, Sir Henry Coventry, the English ambassador, stayed here.
Nieuwe Veste
Now it is part of Nieuwe Veste, where music, theatre, visual arts and dance are central. And you will find the library here. In the garden, formerly the garden of Huis Ocrum, stands a mulberry tree that is 250 years old, a living monument.
