De Vereniging, 1992

A work of art by Matthew Filipowski. This artwork consists of three large, waving shapes. The shapes are made of metal and have a dark brown colour. They stand upright in the grass and seem to dance among the trees, evoking a sense of movement and nature.

Painted metal, approx. 4 m high

Original description:
Dancing like the tentacles of sea anemones, the abstract forms of Matthew Filipowski reach towards the sky. Originally, they were located at the former Amphia Hospital on Langedijk. Due to the demolition of the hospital, the sculpture was relocated. In the medical environment, the sculpture primarily evoked associations with femininity and masculinity, entrails, or blood vessels among the public. Here, among the trees and near the River De Mark, it takes on a more natural significance. The three separate forms, with their undulating lines, are almost as fluid as the river. However, in all their mobility, they are firmly anchored in the ground in an eternal relationship with each other and their surroundings, just like the monumental trees around them.

Matthew Filipowski (Boston 1952) lived and worked in Tilburg since 1979 and regularly undertook commissions for public spaces. In January 2001, he returned to the United States. Since then, there has been no trace of him.
