Blue Tree at the OLV

The Blue Tree opposite the OLV on Paul Windhausenweg symbolizes young people for whom life had become unlivable due to mental health issues. It is part of the worldwide Blue Tree project.

The artwork invites us to pause together and reflect on mental suffering among young people and to start conversations about it. Many young people in the Netherlands also struggle with mental health issues. Suicide is even the leading cause of death among young people.
The Blue Tree in Breda is dedicated to Milou Verhoof (17) from Bavel. Milou wanted to make (hopeless) mental suffering talkable so that young people who are deeply mentally affected feel supported and taken seriously.

The Blue Tree Project, of which this tree is a part, originated in 2019 in Australia. Worldwide, there are now over 1,400: Blue Trees, each with its own story.
