Her father Richard is a failed life coach, her brother Dwayne refuses to speak, her uncle Frank is homosexual and suicidal, her grandfather Edwin is addicted to heroin, and her mother Sheryl is slowly losing her mind. When Olive then finds out she gets to participate in the finals of the Little Miss Sunshine contest, the whole family decides to travel from Albuquerque to California in their old Volkswagen van.</p>
