The two largest wars in history took place in the 20th century. The First and Second World Wars left wounds that have not yet healed, even in 2025. In the Netherlands alone, life and art are still marked by the events and by the way fellow countrymen behaved. In this lecture, the role of conductor Willem Mengelberg will be examined in particular. Not only during the Second World War but also during the First, his pro-German stance was a subject of criticism. And what did this mean for music practice in the Netherlands? Drs.
