Literature & Music at Nieuwe Veste

In the latest event in the series Literature and Music of this season, the autobiographical novel “De as van mijn moeder” by Irish author Frank McCourt is central. 

Despite the somewhat macabre title, it’s a book to make you happy. It tells the story of Frankie, who grows up in Irish Limerick in deep poverty. A tough childhood indeed, seen through the eyes of a growing boy who knows no better than that hunger is normal, that children die from lack, and that shoes are a luxury.

The reality and the loving logic of the child are touching. Sentiment, reproaches, and judgments are far to seek. It is a strongly human, unforgettable book, imbued with happiness, where the cello and the piano create a beautiful added atmosphere.

The narrator is Miranda Wiercx, who besides being an English teacher is also a refreshing actress.
