Who doesn’t know the colour and scent of blooming heather? It is not so obvious that we can still enjoy it today. Thirty years ago, the heather fields threatened to become overgrown with scrub and to dry out, due to lowering groundwater levels and the influx of fertilizers from the surrounding area and air pollution. The ponds dried up and the natural values declined.
The Galderse Heide has been extensively worked on in recent years: the overly nutrient-rich top layer has been stripped, dried-out ponds have been excavated, and a wide strip of coniferous forest has been felled. This has paved the way for greater diversity in plant and animal species. The heather vegetation has reappeared here and there, and a sheep herd grazes the area a few times a year. A wooden boardwalk has been constructed through the marshy heather area. 

If you want to see how the heather is recovering from the drying out and overgrowth of the previous century, join us for a walk and experience the scents and colours of the now beautifully purple-blooming heather.

After rain, this area can be marshy. Make sure to wear waterproof shoes or boots.

Registration is possible up to the day of the walk. After registering, you will receive information about the starting point.
The walk begins at 10:00 am and lasts until approximately 12:00 pm.

On Sunday 10 August, the nature guides of IVN Mark & Donge will walk through the southernmost part of the Mastbos near Breda, where the purple heather is in full bloom in August.
