IVN Markdal Nature Walk

On Sunday morning, 13 September, the nature guides from IVN Mark & Donge, in collaboration with IVN Dintel- en Marklanden, will lead a walk through the Markdal.

Information

It all begins in a wet meadow near the small Belgian hamlet of Koekhoven: water bubbles up, forming a stream that meanders its way towards Breda. The flow is fed by various tributaries and drainage ditches. The stream becomes a brook and eventually a river which, after 80 km, flows into the Dintel and empties into the Volkerak.

We are talking about the Mark. The landscape of the Mark Valley is a typical stream-valley landscape, with an originally meandering stream and marshy banks. In various places along the banks were higher sandy mounds, known as donken.

In the 1960s and 1970s, the stream was canalised to allow water to drain away more quickly. This was beneficial for agriculture, but not for nature. At the beginning of the 21st century, it was decided to restore the natural course of the Bovenmark.
Around 2004, meanders were reintroduced into the river course in the northern section (Bieberg). The surrounding land is managed naturally. The meadows have been converted into nutrient-poor grassland, with impoverished soil and a high water table.

Considerable work has also now been carried out on redesigning the area around Galder. By creating new nature areas, it is hoped that the number of plant and animal species will increase.

IVN walk
During this walk near Bieberg, you will see what the nature restoration has achieved. The seepage water that rises here is rich in lime and iron, contributing to distinctive plant growth. Thanks to the fish pass that has been constructed, many fish are once again swimming in the Mark, attracting herons. Sand martins nest in the steep banks. Reed warblers can be heard in the reeds.

Registration is possible up to and including the day of the walk. After registering, you will receive information about the meeting point.
