On Sunday 13 October, the nature guides from IVN Mark &amp; Donge will be walking on the edge of clay and sand.

Kelsdonk is a nature reserve managed by Staatsbosbeheer. It is located to the north of Etten-Leur on the ‘Naad van Brabant’, the transition zone from high sandy soils to wet, low peat and clay areas. Kelsdonk has been awarded the title of “Natte Natuurparel” (Wet Nature Pearl) by the province of North Brabant. Nature Pearls are areas with special natural values. This concerns water-dependent, fragile nature that must be restored and preserved. 
The area lies at the Leurse Haven, an old meander of the Mark. The Mark now flows a bit further north. Kelsdonk is an attractive, open polderscape. In earlier centuries, a lot of peat was extracted here. This is still visible in the long narrow parcels, a ‘slagenlandschap’ (fields landscape), as seen in most peat extraction areas. It is now all grassland with some small wet woodlands in old, flooded peat pits. Kelsdonk is managed as a breeding bird area with botanical values.

During the landscape walks, the distance is greater and the pace is faster than in many other IVN activities. Kelsdonk is a marshy area where waterproof, high shoes are usually needed. Bring rain gear if rain is forecasted. Make sure to bring lunch and drinks in any case.
