IVN Jubilee landscape walk Markdal

Discover the 50th landscape walk of IVN Mark & Donge on June 1st. Walk approximately 20 km through the Mark Valley and admire nature restoration.

Information

On Sunday 1 June, the naturalists of IVN Mark & Donge will set out for the 50th landscape walk. Due to this anniversary, the walk will also have a special character.

Since the first landscape walk in 2006, IVN and other nature conservation organizations have managed to bring the natural restoration of the Markdal onto the agenda of the province and water board. Now, after nearly 20 years, you can see the first results with freely flowing meanders in Markdal-south.

The previously heavily meandering river De Mark was partly canalised in the past. However, the rapid water drainage proved disastrous for the groundwater level and for nature, which suffered from the drying out. For years now, work has been underway to restore the natural, winding course through this stream valley. Since 1997, meanders have been re-excavated and puddle-dam areas created.

Thanks to all these efforts, nature is flourishing. You will find increasingly special vegetation. Birds feel at home on the water and in the shrub edges, as evidenced by the nesting sand martins and storks.

This tour of about 20 km is significantly longer than most other IVN walks. Of course, the guides will tell you about the beautiful landscape, but they pay less attention to details. Therefore, wear sturdy, waterproof shoes and bring rain gear and a lunch with you.

Registration is possible until the day of the walk. After registering, you will receive information about the departure point.
