IVN family walk: looking for animal tracks in Dorst Forestry Conservancy

When walking in the countryside, people often hope to see a deer, a fox or a squirrel. But that hardly ever happens. Animals are shy. They hide as soon as people come nearby. Nevertheless, they leave traces everywhere. During this family walk, you will search for them. Look out for paw prints in the mud, gnaw marks on pine cones or branches, and droppings on the ground. Owls and other birds of prey even cough up pellets containing undigested food remains. Some beetles also leave traces: they make small tunnels beneath the bark of trees. Once you learn to recognise them, you can discover which animals live there, even if you do not see them. Boswachterij Dorst is a large and varied nature reserve covering more than 1,100 hectares. You will walk through forests, sand drifts and clay pits. This walk is enjoyable for the whole family. Children often find looking for tracks even more fun than seeing the animal itself.
