IVN Family Walk Duiventoren

During this special autumn walk, children will learn through play about the seeds and fruits of shrubs and trees. Did you know that there are different types of acorns and chestnuts? They will also look at cones from coniferous trees, helicopter seeds, berries and more. How do these fruits and seeds travel as far away as possible from the parent plant? Everyone knows the little parachutes of the dandelion – lighter than feathers, they are carried kilometres away on the wind. But what about large and heavy fruits such as acorns, chestnuts and nuts? Through illustrations, demonstrations, games and stories, the children will learn all about fruits and seeds and the ways in which plants prepare for the time ahead.

The autumn forest provides food for all kinds of animals. Many animals build up supplies to get through the winter. There is occasionally something for people to nibble on too. Think of beech nuts, hazelnuts, sweet chestnuts and some berries. But be careful! Most types of berry are not suitable for people. Some are too sour, too floury, tasteless or even poisonous.
