IVN Dorst Landscape Walk

On Sunday 8 November, the nature guides from IVN Mark & Donge will take a long walk through the landscape around Dorst. The theme is from arable land to shifting sands and from country estate to loam.

Information

People were already living in Dorst around 1300, but they probably did not have much to live on. To the north lay a sparse heathland and to the south it was marshy. The sandy soils were too poor for farming, and there was nothing for cows to graze on either. To make a living, people turned to goat farming. A statue in the village centre and a work of art in the woods remind us of this period. However, layers of clay and loam have also been found in the area, remnants of the Ice Age, when a river flowed here. Several brickworks once stood in the immediate surroundings, making grateful use of this loam. This period of history has also left visible traces. Anyone who goes walking in this area today will be richly rewarded. Nature has much to offer here thanks to the great variety of landscapes. There are woods, pools, sand drifts and country estates. Each type has its own history of formation. Every habitat has its own flora and fauna. This will be a walk for keen walkers. The IVN Mark & Donge nature guides want to show you the great diversity of the landscape, so you will cover a distance of 20 kilometres during this walk. There will be less focus on details than usual, but enjoying nature remains the main aim. So put on good walking shoes and don’t forget to bring a packed lunch. To be on the safe side, bring waterproof clothing too. Registration is possible up to and including the day of the walk. After registering, you will receive information about the departure point. The walk starts at 10:00 and lasts until approximately 16:00. More information and the registration form can be found on the IVN Mark & Donge website under Activities.
