Breda Guild: Nieuwe Mark Tour

Guided tour along the new urban river, the Nieuwe Mark, which, like the new Seeligpark, forms part of Breda’s ambition to become a ‘city in a park’.

Information

The Nieuwe Mark project is designed to reduce heat stress and bring water, greenery and biodiversity back to the paved-up city centre. The quay walls have been constructed so that trees can take root in them and plants can germinate. In the future, sightseeing boats carrying tourists may sail through the Nieuwe Mark.

In the past, Breda’s authorities also made plans to bring the river under their control.
For example, in the 1930s the municipal council unanimously decided to fill in the Harbour and the Mark. After several decades, it was decided to reopen them. A fascinating example of changing policy, implemented on both occasions after careful consideration.

Route
The route starts at the corner of Kraanstraat and Vismarktstraat and passes historic gems such as the Spanjaardsgat, old patricians’ houses and breweries. The repurposing of old buildings can be seen, among other places, at the Koeharentapijtfabriek, now used as studio and living space. The Groot Arsenaal houses the Rooi Pannen educational institution. And a simple monastery has been transformed into the fashionable five-star Hotel Nassau Breda.
The walk ends on the grounds of the Rooi Pannen.

Lunch
Afterwards, it is possible to have lunch in the historic Arsenal, now one of the Rooi Pannen’s training restaurants.
