Gilde de Baronie : Tour Nieuwe Mark
Information
The project Nieuwe Mark provides for the reduction of heat stress and the reintroduction of water, green spaces, and biodiversity into the paved city centre. The quay walls are constructed in a way that allows trees to take root and plants to sprout. In the future, sightseeing boats with tourists can sail through the Nieuwe Mark.
In the past as well, Breda authorities planned to shape the river to their advantage.
For example, in the early 1960s, the municipal government decided to dam the Harbour. After several decades, a decision was made to reopen it. An fascinating example of changing policies, both implemented after careful deliberation.
Route
The route starts at the corner of Kraanstraat and Vismarktstraat and passes by pearls from the past, such as the Spanjaardsgat, old patrician houses, and breweries. The old buildings are being given new functions, as seen at the Koeharentapijtfabriek, now studio and living spaces. The Groot Arsenaal houses the educational institution De Rooi Pannen. And a simple monastery was transformed into the fashionable five-star Hotel Nassau Breda.
The walk ends on the grounds of De Rooi Pannen.
