Filmhouse Classic: Cría Cuervos (50th Anniversary)

This edition’s Filmhuis Classic is Cría Cuervos

An absorbing Spanish classic by director Carlos Saura, in which a child’s inner world converges with the political reality of Francoist Spain. A layered film about loss, memory and family.

About the film:
In Carlos Saura’s enchanting coming-of-age classic, the memory of childhood takes on something mysterious, sensual and gently unsettling. Ana Torrent is unforgettable as Ana, a girl wandering through a house filled with grief, secrets and the shadow of her deceased mother. Set against the backdrop of dictator Franco’s final years, Cría Cuervos shows how political and familial trauma take root in a child’s imagination, where catchy pop songs, morbid fantasies and everyday rituals suddenly acquire a mysterious power. As intimate as it is historically charged, the film grew into a landmark of Spanish cinema, in which a country cautiously bids farewell to its ghosts.
