With the exhibition 'The Lusten van Engelbrecht' at Stedelijk Museum Breda, this summer is dedicated to 'De tuin der lusten,' the most famous painting by Jheronimus Bosch. In conjunction with this exhibition, KOP asked five young artists to create 'Bredase Tuinen der Lusten' in the city center. Four inner gardens Four indoor gardens feature sculptures by Britte Koolen, Renée Bus and Silke Riis. Digital creatures created by Matunda Groenendijk and Freek van Zoest populate the gardens and take you on a journey along heaven, earth and hell. He was one of the founders of the Breda Nassau dynasty, from which our current royal family originated. Source of inspiration The imagery of Jheronimus Bosch is enchanting and mysterious, full of absurd and magical creatures. 'The tuin der lusten' is a narrative about human nature and its temptations. It is a triptych that you can look at endlessly and can't stop talking about. For centuries it has inspired artists. This time, five young artists offer a fresh look at Bosch's masterpiece. Scattered across four locations in downtown Breda, sculptures come to life with Augmented Reality. At each location, one panel of "The tuin der lusten" will take center stage. This science fiction subgenre inspires her sculptures and installations, in which 'uncertainty' is central. Her work changes slowly over time, inviting you to find beauty in growth and decay.Renée Bus (St. Joost School of Art &amp; Design, Breda, 2018 / Edinburgh College of Art, UK, 2023) brings people and nature together in her work. She creates clay or textile objects that tell stories of growth and transience. Everyday experiences and impressions weave Renée into rituals, such as carrying an object in your pocket.Freek van Zoest (St. Joost School of Art &amp; Design, 's-Hertogenbosch, 2021) searches for the power in the interaction between the world and human perception. With his work he unravels symbolic imagery to get closer to the essence. Freek uses charcoal, pencil, ink and oil paint, and also makes sculptures of wood and ceramics.Matunda Groenendijk (St. Joost School of Art &amp; Design,'s-Hertogenbosch, 2021) tries to use Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality to show the familiar physical space as something new. The familiar is supplemented with a new poetic dimension. She is fascinated by environments in which every detail contributes to a story.Britte Koolen (Utrecht School of the Arts, 2018) creates modular installations and sculptures that enter into a relationship with their surroundings. The space in which the sculptures are located is as important as the space they occupy. Characteristic of her work is the attention to rhythm, peace and silence.

In Search of the Balance of Things. From July 19 to August 25, KOP and Royal Roots present interactive art installations inspired by De Tuin der Lusten by Jheronimus Bosch in four courtyards in the center of Breda.
