City Conversation: Does everyone in Breda have equal opportunities?

Discrimination affects people every day. Sometimes visibly, sometimes less visibly, but always with consequences for the people who experience it. Breda Municipal Council believes it is important not only to develop policies on this issue, but above all to engage in dialogue with the people concerned. That is why, on 16 October, it is organising a city-wide discussion on discrimination, equality and equal opportunities. The central question of the evening is: what can we do together to make Breda a city where everyone feels welcome, safe and valued equally?

Information

During the city discussion on 16 October, the municipality will bring residents, professionals, community organisations and public officials together to discuss discrimination, equality and equal opportunities in Breda.

The evening will begin with a spoken-word performance by Gershwin Bonevacia and a keynote speech by Nikita Krouwel, who will both reflect on these themes from the perspective of their own experiences and expertise. The conversation will then begin with the city’s residents. What forms of exclusion do people experience? What is going well in Breda? And perhaps even more importantly: what can the municipality do together with residents to make Breda more inclusive and equitable? During an interactive Q&A, Mayor Paul Depla, Alderman Marike de Nobel and a representative of RADAR, among others, will discuss these issues with those present.

This evening is not only about discussing experiences and challenges, but above all about what the city can do together. Breda is already home to many residents, organisations and initiatives committed to equality and inclusion. The city discussion provides an opportunity to connect these groups, gather new ideas and inspire people to make a contribution themselves. We will also launch the campaign to raise awareness of Meldpunt Discriminatie.nl. The proceeds from the evening will go towards the further implementation of the anti-discrimination agenda and may contribute to new collaborations and initiatives from across the city.
