Black Marble in MEZZ

Black Marble weaves melancholic messages into danceable beats. Four years after playing in the Netherlands, little has changed at its core. Chris Stewart still makes records hunched over analogue synths that complement his monotonous baritone voice. On his most recent album, ‘Life In Small Spaces’, he reflects on how underground music has changed over time, but also on how a blueprint of keeping things simple and staying true to yourself is the only way to live in this complicated world.

Information

Where earlier records were dark and minimalist, the sound of ‘Life In Small Spaces’ is considerably warmer. The walls of synths have been replaced by more guitar, inspired by the staccato guitar lines once heard on American college radio, left of the dial. Stewart explains the reason for the change as a way to “create a jangly, hypnotic sound. Like a radio tuning knob caught between two stations.”
