Materials with a story
Interior
At the Explore Breda Store, everything revolves around customisation and actuality. It vividly reflects the diversity and dynamism of our city, always 100% relevant and imbued with beautiful local stories. C-E Design and local maker Noest Creatieve Projecten have beautifully incorporated this philosophy into their design and interior construction. There are elements that are foldable, adjustable or movable, allowing us to flexibly respond to what is happening in the city. This means there is always something new to discover at the Explore Breda Store.
1. Breda Beams
These Beams were developed by PlaSTiEK Breda and are made from recycled plastic waste. Plastic is a material with a long lifespan. PlaSTiEK Breda started by converting waste plastic into plastic tiles, but soon discovered that not all hard plastics are suitable for this process. Therefore, PlaSTiEK began experimenting with other applications of plastic. They created steel moulds to fill with plastic, casting the material under high pressure and at a temperature of 200 degrees. After nearly two years of research and experimentation, the Beams were born, an innovative building block made of plastic!
Interior for tomorrow, a design studio from Breda specialising in sustainable and circular interiors, had already found their way to PlaSTiEK Breda for furnishing LOYA! A sustainable clothing store on Wilhelminastraat in Breda. Be sure to stop by: the tile wall with PlaSTiEK tiles and the use of beams in the interior are a sustainable delight for the eyes!
2. Bredase Bomen
This was once a tree from Breda! Although the municipality does its best to minimise tree felling, sometimes it is unfortunately necessary. Think of sick trees, redesigning areas or replacing outdated sewers. Beautiful products can be made from them, from gifts for the neighbourhood where the trees come from to furniture and small accessories.
Bredase Bomen is a collaboration between Tim van den Burg and the Municipality of Breda. Each new product is branded with where the tree comes from, what type of wood it is, and how old it was. This way, the wood from all those beautiful trees still gets a second life, as shown here in the Explore Breda Store.
3. Felt wall
Military green felt with an Orange past
The Felt Wall in the Explore Breda Store is made from old military uniforms from the Dutch Ministry of Defence. Since 1828, the Castle of Breda has been home to the Royal Military Academy, where around 700 cadets and trainees are trained annually to become officers for various branches of the armed forces. The castle has a rich history; it once served as the ancestral home of the House of Nassau and played a significant role in European history. It was a central location for political and military discussions from the 15th to the 17th century.
4. Acoustic Panels
5. Sustainable fabric for the cushions
This sustainable fabric from Vescom combines three qualities: Avon, a mottled fabric; Norfolk, a grid; and Harding, a twill fabric. These fabrics are carefully designed to be used together, highlighting fundamental weaving techniques. The fabric is made from 100% recycled PET bottles. In this way, the plastic problem is turned into a sustainable solution. The PET bottles are collected, sorted by type and colour, and processed into flakes. These flakes are then pressed into yarn, which is textured, dyed, and given permanent flame-retardant properties. In Vescom's German weaving mill, this high-quality yarn is processed into a particularly soft and matte textile, and processed into beautiful sustainable cushions by OUR label social workplace.
6. Carpet
This carpet is a creation by DESSO in collaboration with artist Patricia Urquiola. Designer Patricia Urquiola (1961) is one, if not the most well-known female designers of our time, known for her use of colour. With this design, she has created a sense of depth by incorporating colours within a grid. This results in a vibrant, warm and sensitive look, and a particularly visual effect that brings any space to life. The collection is fully recyclable and consists of 100% recycled yarn and 60.7% recycled raw materials. It has a remarkably low circular CO2 footprint of just 1.03 kg CO2/m2.
7. Table Tops
Smile PlasticsĀ® offers a beautiful collection of 100% recycled plastic waste such as packaging materials, PET bottles and cutting boards. Here, unique, moisture-resistant and fully recyclable tabletops are created, which are also easy to work with. The design, named Heron after the wisdom of this stately bird, is made from an aesthetic colour palette inspired by the colours of its feathers.
8. Veneer for on top of sheet on top of blocks
This CornWall panel is made from 100% biomass, mainly corn kernels, a globally common organic waste. It is a sustainable alternative to ceramic wall cladding or other less eco-friendly composite materials. Normally, the stored CO2 in corn kernels is released during combustion or rotting in the field. By using it in the CornWall, the CO2 remains stored longer. Cornwall is biodegradable or 100% reusable, with no waste at the end of its life cycle. The panels are not glued but supplied with a demountable anchoring system, making them fully circular.
9. The paint that was used
Wijzonol Wijzotex Extra Mat is a solvent-free, water-dilutable, scrub-resistant and streak-free smooth indoor wall paint, based on sustainably sourced binders.
Choosing to paint with these sustainable wall paints is a conscious decision. Wijzonol Wijzotex Extra Mat utilises raw materials from 2nd generation biomass. A clear oil is extracted from the waste of biomass such as olives, corn, and sunflowers. This oil forms the basis of an innovative binder technology. Producing this 96% renewable material does not deplete agricultural land or food production for humans and animals. Together, we contribute to a better future for the next generations.
