Sustainable initiatives

In Breda you will find a lot of sustainable initiatives. Filtering through the canals to clear up waste, companies that make furniture from plastic, and active residents who ensure that the city becomes even cleaner. Curious about these initiatives? On this page, you'll find a collection.

The Green Submarine

Monique from The Green Submarine has brought the perfect Christmas tree to the market: the Kamerden. What is so cool and green about this fir is that it can stay up all year round. During Christmas, you hang the fir with baubles and during Easter with chicks and Easter decorations. Are you celebrating your birthday? Cover it with flags!

The Kamerden does not lose its needles, provided you take good care of it. No hassle of cleaning up every day, so ;)

The Kamerden is available at The Green Submarine in Breda!

Sint Annastraat 8

No Waste Army

The No Waste Army is committed to reducing waste of vegetables and fruit. Supermarkets still reject many vegetables and fruits that, in terms of weight or shape, they deem unsuitable for the shelves. Chefs affiliated with the No Waste Army turn these into the most delicious juices, soups, and sauces. By becoming a member of the No Waste Army, you will receive a box of these tasty, long-lasting products at home every quarter.  They were also the winners of the Big Green Idea 2023 by NPO 1.

PureLou

PureLou is an Ecofriendly Hair Salon on Wilhelminastraat in Breda. They are known for their sustainable way of working and specialise in cutting curls. At this salon, the PureLou Conceptstore is also located in the same building. At PureLou Conceptstore you can find ecofriendly products. From clothing and make-up to accessories for the home. It is a place where you can just be yourself, drop in for a chat, and order organic coffee with something tasty (also vegan). The staff are happy to give advice and help you lovingly on your way to a more sustainable lifestyle!

Picking up litter

Breda has a lot of active residents who are committed to reducing litter on the streets. Join a cleanup campaign in your local area or in a natural reserve and help create a cleaner Breda! Small actions can make a big difference. For example, by picking up trash from your sidewalk. Curious about all the initiatives? We have created an overview.

DoneerRing

Deposit money should not go in the trash. Neither should plastic bottles. For this reason, the Donation Ring was conceived. A national initiative, but first launched in Breda! An iron ring around rubbish bins where people can place their deposit bottles, so others can collect them in a proper way for the deposit refund.

Plastic collector in the canal

The municipality of Breda has installed a plastic collector in the waterway the Mark. With the plastic collector near Belcrum Beach, Breda takes a new step to combat plastic soup in the canals and improve water quality. The plastic collector is a floating arm that guides the waste entering the Mark via the canals into a catch basket. The plastic collector is situated on the inside of the waterway because most floating debris is blown there by the wind and boats operate on the outside. The basket is emptied once a week.

NK Tile Wedges

From 21 March to 31 October, we are running the Dutch Tile Wipping Championship. Which municipality lifts the most tiles and replaces them with greenery? Breda is participating again this year. Will you help to replace tiles with grass, flowerbeds, trees, and street gardens? This way, Breda becomes more climate-resilient, more comfortable for insects and animals, cooler on hot days, and much more beautiful!

Breda makes me happy

From the need for positivity, Breda maakt mij blij decided in the spring of 2020 to help farmers and growers who were left with a surplus of products due to the coronavirus crisis. Peonies and asparagus were sold via a Tikkie, but soon Breda Maakt Mij Blij grew into a platform with large-scale rescue actions like the Vierdaagse gladioli, the wine from the nuns, and the pumpkins from farmer Chris.

Zero Waste

Significantly reduce waste. That is the mission of Zero Waste. Because: the less stuff you buy that is packaged, the less you throw away. This hospitality business in Breda is participating in this initiative.

The Fridge of Curio

Anyone who has leftover food or is in need of food can use Curio's fridge. The Fridge is an idea from mbo students of the hospitality course at Curio Hotelschool Breda. A fun and useful, but especially sustainable phenomenon from abroad. The school hopes to combat food waste with this initiative. Several Breda-based companies are already participating, including the Municipality of Breda.

The fridge is available on school days from 10:00 to 16:00 at the Curio Hotelschool on Markendaalseweg 35 in Breda.

BeterBoompje

Every year, we in the Netherlands dispose of about 2.5 million Christmas trees. Wasteful! BeterBoompje aims to replace these throwaway trees with real Christmas trees that can be replanted (and reused). Do you also believe that the holiday season can be a bit more sustainable? Take the first step towards a greener Christmas and choose a BeterBoompje this year.
