The XXL Square on the Chassé Promenade
Good news: BredaPhoto’s XXL Square is back! Just like during the 2022 edition, part of the public space is once again being transformed into an outdoor gallery filled with impressive large-format photography. The XXL Square is free to visit and shows how visual art literally comes to life in the heart of the city. Whether you’re visiting BredaPhoto specifically or simply happen to be passing by, the enormous works are guaranteed to catch your eye.
The Blossoming Garden by Çiğdem Yüksel at Carré Chassé
With The Blossoming Garden, artist Çiğdem Yüksel gives a face to five remarkable residents of Hoge Vucht, a neighbourhood in Breda. Ordinary people who build their neighbourhood every day. Through personal photographs and conversations, Yüksel tells the stories of Mohammed, Sultan, Lemia, Eda and Sema: residents who bring people together, organise and look out for others. The colourful wall tapestry shows how a community can grow through the strength of engaged people.
Shipwrecks of Empire by Yuki Kihara at Koepel District
In Shipwrecks of Empire, you’ll discover an impressive installation by artist Yuki Kihara, created especially for BredaPhoto. You’ll walk past life-sized images of historic shipwrecks, a sunken naval vessel and floating shipping containers. Through these, Kihara tells the story of colonial history in the Pacific and shows the consequences that are still visible today. At the same time, the installation also makes room for a different perspective. Traditional Sāmoan boats show how people lived in harmony with the ocean for generations. A remarkable work that you simply have to see!
Uprooted by Puck Verkade at Carré Chassé
In Uprooted, Puck Verkade takes you on a unique video installation exploring the relationship between humans and nature. In a soft, inflatable space, you follow the journey of a rabbit-like creature as it descends into the depths of the earth. Through animation, performance, music and storytelling, Verkade explores themes such as responsibility, change and the possibility of recovery. An impressive work that invites you to reflect on our place in the natural world – and which is sure to make for a great Instagram post too. ;-)
Accessible and tangible photographs by Daphne Wagemans in Koepel District
In the photo exhibition The Salt Ate Away Her Eyes, photographer Amera Elnaal tells the personal story of her blind parents in Tripoli, Libya. Through intimate images, she shows how love, memory and caring for one another form a bridge between worlds. A number of photographs from this series have been converted by Daphne Wagemans into tangible images with raised relief and accompanying audio. This makes the photography accessible and engaging in a different way for visitors who are blind or partially sighted.
FOTODOK X BredaPhoto: A Spell Bundle – Manifesting Queer Futurity at Clublokaal
On invite of BredaPhoto, FOTODOK is bringing the group exhibition A Spell Bundle – Manifesting Queer Futurity to the festival. In it, five artists portray different perspectives on a future where there is room for greater equality, inclusivity and freedom. The exhibition invites you to look beyond the here and now and reflect together on the worlds we can create. Highly recommended!
on sorrow by Annaleen Louwes at StadsGalerij
The StadsGalerij is showing photographer Annaleen Louwes’s new photo series on sorrow. The series was created during a stay in a dark Flemish barn at the Van Gogh House in Zundert. With barely any light, Louwes explores what photography can still make visible. Dust, cobwebs and silence take on a tangible presence. Take a moment to pause at this contemplative exhibition about solace, darkness and the beauty of what usually remains unseen.
