The central theme of this book is the scope for expression that people with regard to sexual, sex, and gender diversity have had and still have in Breda and West Brabant. Charles de Lasco, the city painter of Breda, had no scope for expression: in 1639, he was strangled on Zandberg due to 'sodomy'. Maria of Antwerp, in the eighteenth century, entered military service three times as a man, married twice to women, and was a father once. Judge Frans Hoppenbrouwers was accused of same-sex sexual behavior in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, defended himself against these accusations, and managed to retain his position at the Breda court. Just like the men who, during the course of the nineteenth century, were accused of having sex with men, they were loners: they stood alone against an environment that wanted nothing to do with their sexual behavior and would rather ignore it completely. They often also had their own problems with their sexual feelings.
