The central topic of this book is the playing space, which people had and still have concerning sexual, sex and gender diversity in Breda and West Brabant. Charles de Lasco, city painter of Breda, had no playing space: in 1639 he was strangled on the Zandberg for ‘sodomy’. Maria of Antwerp in the eighteenth century entered military service three times as a man, married twice to women, and became a father once. Judge Frans Hoppenbrouwers was accused in the first quarter of the nineteenth century of same-sex sexual behaviour, defended himself against it, and managed to maintain his position at the Breda court. Like the men who, during the nineteenth century, were accused of sex with men, they were loners: they stood alone against an environment that refused to acknowledge their sexual behaviour and preferred to silence them. They often also had problems with their own sexual feelings.
