The Rotterdam Energy Hall, somewhere in the mid-nineties: thousands of gabbers come together to dance the night away. There, Alex, Moon, and Ben become best friends. They seem invincible, in a haze of ecstasy, sweat, and at 160 beats per minute, until they lose themselves and each other.Twenty-five years later and a life further, Alex and Moon meet again. For one night, they confront their past, their choices, and try to rediscover what they have lost.We Were Gabbers is a wild musical theatre trip by director Olivier Diepenhorst, set in the gabber scene of the nineties, when as much as a quarter of young people identified as gabbers, much to the dismay of the rest of the Netherlands.
