In the Netherlands, there are more than 2,400 species of butterflies. 53 of these are day-flying butterflies; all the others are nocturnal. Some species of moths are also active during the day and search for food in the vegetation. Others look for light in the evening or at night and suddenly flutter around your bedside lamp, for example. 
Night-flying butterflies are often less brightly coloured than day butterflies, but there are also very vividly coloured specimens. What exactly to look out for to determine whether you are dealing with a day or a night butterfly can be learned during this night. 
Bats Bats are the only mammals capable of flight, and they are the most agile fliers in the animal kingdom. They go out in the evening and at night to find food and need to catch about three hundred insects per night to survive. Bats see poorly but have very good ears. They use sonar: they emit sounds that bounce off various objects and prey. From the returning echo, they deduce where prey is and rapidly adjust their course to catch it.
Many species of moths are attracted to the scent of flowering flowers, but also to rotten fruit or faeces. Armed with a flashlight, we go on a search. Additionally, we attract butterflies with light and with bait in the orchard. Nocturnal moths follow their noses and can therefore be lured with various fragrant substances.
Bats hunt where there are many insects, and some species love nocturnal moths. The high-pitched sounds that bats make are inaudible to humans. With bat detectors, we can pick up these sounds and convert them into sounds we can hear. Each bat species makes its own unique sound.
