Nature walk at Klokkenberg estate | Gilde De Baronie

Explore the mysterious Markdal and Mastbos with a guide, where sanatorium stories, smuggling routes, and baronial avenues come together in a landscape full of history and nature.

Information

De Klokkenberg was originally a sanatorium and is now a unique ‘residential area’ overlooking the Markdal and Mastbos. The forests were laid out by 16th-century city barons and consist of long avenues, heaths, and ponds. It has a long history of princes, poachers, and smugglers. Since 1899, it has been managed by Staatsbosbeheer. The annual visitor numbers of nearly 2 million create contrasts between management and recreation. Let the guide lead you through this special part of the Barony, the Markdal, and Mastbos. Fortunately, the boardwalk has been carefully reopened for walking.
