This summer, two extraordinary sculptures by artist Dré Wapenaar will be hung on the pillars in the Theaterstraat of the Chassé Theater. These imposing pillars in the theatre not only serve as a supporting structure but also evoke associations with trees in Wapenaar’s mind - hence his designation: The Forest of Hertzberger. With this, he refers to architect Herman Hertzberger, designer of the Chassé Theatre and known for his people-centred architecture in which space always invites meeting, dwelling, and play.
Hertzberger's work is characterized by creating places where people can retreat without isolating themselves - a vision that closely aligns with Wapenaar’s work. He is known for his designs at the intersection of art, design, and architecture. His work often focuses on creating temporary meeting places, where the relationship between people, space, and nature is central. Wapenaar’s tree tents have been exhibited worldwide and represent a playful yet thoughtful way to bring people closer to their environment and to each other. These teardrop-shaped tents hang from trees and accommodate two people. They were originally designed for environmental activists occupying trees and symbolize a connection with nature. By hanging these sculptures on the theatre's pillars, a new layer is added to the architectural experience: a dialogue between art and building, between shelter and openness.

The Theatrestraat itself, with its rhythm of pillars, is designed as a public space within the building – a kind of internal square where people can stay. The addition of Wapenaar’s tree tents enhances this character and makes the human and playful potential of Hertzberger’s architecture even more tangible. The project connects two thinkers who both believe in the power of space to promote social interaction. In this way, the Chassé Theatre will this summer be not only a venue for performing arts but also a place for spatial poetry and meeting.
