In his latest 'living installation', Dries Verhoeven examines shoplifting. The late-capitalist person tries to survive in a system that has lost its shine, without any sight of an alternative. Everything must go, but in favour of what?In a time when we like to display our good behaviour, Dries focuses on the socially undesirable. How exemplary are we really when we feel unobserved, for instance at the self-checkout? Dries spoke to more and less affluent people who occasionally 'forget' to pay, to thieves in detention, and to those who view theft as a form of resistance. He invited proletarian shoppers and self-proclaimed Robin Hoods to engage in self-examination. The result is a grim depiction of the dark depths of our moral actions.In the middle of a gallery stands a replica of a supermarket aisle. As a visitor, you can walk around the installation or peek into the aisle from behind the products on the shelves to catch a glimpse of the desperate consumer. This position evokes associations with that of surveillants who keep an eye on the suspicious subject.
