On Wednesday, 1 October, Breda en Tilburg voor Vrede is organising an evening on war propaganda at Clublokaal. They are doing so under the title “arm yourself against war propaganda”. Guest speaker is historian Anne Morelli. Breda en Tilburg voor Vrede is a local peace movement. They campaign for global peace and oppose the causes of war. Spokesman Michiel Deprez: "There is an impression that war is a natural phenomenon, but in reality it arises from issues such as imperialism, capitalism, racism and oppression. We believe in broad-based resistance from the grassroots, from people who collectively say no to war." Recently, the newspapers have been filled with reports about war. More money needs to be allocated to defence, and the wars being fought seem unpreventable. What is presented as neutral reporting, according to Breda en Tilburg voor Vrede, is actually part of a well-oiled propaganda machine. This propaganda is not new. Historian Anne Morelli wrote the booklet “Elementary Principles of War Propaganda”, which discusses ten principles that were documented in the aftermath of the First World War and are still remarkably relevant today. She will give a lecture this evening. In her talk, Morelli will discuss these principles using historical and contemporary examples. She will also cover the history of NATO and the role it has played in various conflicts. Additionally, there will be discussion of the consequences of militarisation in our environment and its impact. This evening offers a guide to critically analysing how news media reports on war, and is recommended for anyone concerned about the escalating violence of war. Deprez: "You don’t have to be a conspiracy theorist to see that the same arguments are used time and again, all in favour of war.
